Somewhere over the rainbow….

Way up high there’s a land that I dreamed of once in a lullaby…..

Well we can promise you a beautiful land in the hills and valleys of North Wales and dreams while sleeping in our comfortable bedrooms, but the lullaby is up to you as we don’t offer that as a service here at Aberconwy House!

We get a variety of weather in Betws-y-Coed and Snowdonia, often within one day, with our mornings often damp, with drifting clouds lifting in smokey tendrils from the tree tops and as one of our guests commented the other morning, it’s like watching the forest breath. Usually by mid afternoon the cloud has broken and given way to, if not clear skies and full sun, then patches of warm sunshine.

Mid September onwards is a beautiful time of year here in Snowdonia as the lush green of the forest starts to turn to more golden hues and then amber and russet in October, giving way to the bare trees in November and then the village can be seen from the house quite clearly.

Weather is a guaranteed topic of conversation over breakfast, everyone wanting to know what the day will bring. We recommend layers and waterproofs at this time of year, especially as it can be quite mild through the day, but chillier first thing in the morning and in the evening. One thing we have learnt is not to judge your day’s weather by what you see immediately in front of you. Weather changes very quickly living in the mountains and as a good friend once said to me, ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes!’

In the hallway of Aberconwy House we post the mountain forecast courtesy of MWIS which details a 3 day forecast specifically for Snowdon and the surrounding Snowdonian mountains. We also post the BBC forecast for Betws-y-Coed, however, the accuracy of this one is a little dubious! If you’re looking for a sun tan then North Wales is probably not the best choice for that Autumn break, but if you have a pair of sturdy boots, a waterproof jacket and possibly a pair of gloves in your pocket then the whole area is open to you.

Rainbows are a speciality of this area, given that we live in a valley we often get a mix of sunshine and showers all at the same time, however to get a full rainbow as in the picture above is a rarity and so I had to share it with you, you never know maybe one day we will find the pot of gold!
