Welcoming Change

Post-7.-PastPresentFuture1   “How long have you been here?” It’s a question we get a lot at Aberconwy House, but one that usually surprises the enquirer. ‘Just over 9 years,’ is the reply.  Yes, we have been B&B-ers for over 9 years now in beautiful Betws-y-coed and this week we saw the launch of our new website, courtesy of Webdesignforaccommodation.co.uk and it is the latest of many changes to Aberconwy House over the last 9 years. Indeed, it was for want of a ‘change’ that we ended up at Aberconwy House and venturing into the rewarding and often challenging world of bed and breakfast.

Change is a thing that most of us find a tad disconcerting, we like to know what we’re doing and how to do it, it’s only natural – the comfort zone. Guests often choose the same table to eat their breakfast at each morning, even if one with a more favourable view is available, ‘Oh, no we’ll have our usual spot thanks.’ But have you ever wondered if the view could offer you more if you only changed seats? Stuart and I moved our entire outlook when leaving Birmingham (yep a very different view), our careers within sales and marketing, and our children, then aged 2 and 6 years old. We wanted a change that would deliver a lifestyle that offered activity and a more gentler pace of life, we wanted ‘balance’ – have we got that, hmm, some of the time.

We certainly have the beautiful and exciting North Wales countryside on our doorstep, with everything from hiking in the mountains and forests to throwing yourself off a zip wire at great speed and bouncing on gigantic trampolines in slate caverns. There are beaches and rivers and soon to  be Surf Snowdonia for water sports, such a diverse area certainly puts the tick in the box when it comes to ‘we want to be active and have new experiences’.  Working for yourself does mean you are more in control of your time and how you spend it, so the pace of life is what we determine.  Running a 9 bedroom B&B however, can be hectic – fun, but challenging – changing the look and feel of the B&B to somewhere we would like to stay has always been one of our priorities, but it does require continual assessment.  Hence the new website, which we are delighted with and will allow us to continually update it, changing photos and text as and when we feel the need.

This Blog is a ‘change’, something we have never done before, again venturing into the unknown, but keen to step up to the plate and have a go. All things considered, change can be unsettling, but it is how we embrace change and ultimately adapt to it that determines our success and eventually our ‘comfort zone’. We welcome change at Aberconwy House as our fantastic view is constantly changing with the seasons, our guests are temporary residents, coming in and out of our lives and our business is constantly needing a tweek here or there.

So, time to go and change some beds, for the next set of guests that are either trying something different and staying with us for the first time, or returning to a ‘comfort zone’, a place they know well but is a ‘change’ from their every day lives.

“Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next.” Gilda Radner
